Three technologies (MOSFET, IGBT and SiC) used in welding machines.

The differences are as follows as per the latest information as of December 2025:

Welding Machine Buying Guide:

1. MOSFET Welding Machine

(Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor)

  • Uses: This technology is generally used to make machines lightweight and portable.

  • Advantages: Its switching speed is very high, due to which the welding arc remains very stable. It is best for small and precision work.

  • Disadvantages: These machines are prone to overheating. Therefore, this machine should not be used in heavy industries where welding has to be done for a long time.

2. IGBT Welding Machine

(Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistor)

  • Uses: This is currently the most widely used technology in the industry. It is best for heavy industries and factories.

  • Advantages: It can easily withstand high voltage and high current. Compared to MOSFET, it is more robust and can provide continuous work for a long time.

  • Disadvantages: It has a slightly lower switching speed than MOSFET, but it is more reliable for heavy work.

3. SiC Welding Machine

(Silicon Carbide)

  • Uses: This is the most advanced and premium technology of 2025. Which is the fastest, smallest, lightest, yet strongest and best for best efficiency.

  • Advantages: According to Mouser Electronics, a global company from California founded in 1964 and IEEE University Research, SiC machines consume 30% to 45% less electricity than IGBT and can work stably even at high temperatures like 200°C. They are very small in size and extremely light in weight.

  • Disadvantages: Since SiC is the most advanced, best and premium technology, the price of these machines is currently higher than MOSFET and IGBT, which is understandable.

# Final opinion,
Which machine should be chosen for which job:

  • MOSFET: If you have to do small welding jobs occasionally or have a low budget, a MOSFET machine can be an option.

  • IGBT: If you have to do professional welding work, operate the machine all day and need strength, IGBT is a good option.

  • SiC: If you want to operate the machine all day with high efficiency, small size and excellent performance, a welding machine with SiC technology is a great option.
